English pubs awarded Grade II listed building status

Twenty-one pubs across England built between the two world wars are being awarded Grade II listed status.

Historic England says the pubs that have been chosen represent a fascinating time in British history.

Liverpool pub listed as part of government protection drive

A Liverpool pub has been listed for protection by the government. The Wheatsheaf, in St Helens, was selected as one of 21 inter-war pubs as part of a project by Historic England. The watering hole has been given Grade II listed status and recognised as one of the pubs throughout the country that helped change the image of drunkenness associated with pubs. Built in 1938, The Wheatsheaf lured huge crowds on its opening day by the promise of a free pint for ale drinkers. Crowds were allegedly met with Read more [...]

The innbetweeners: whimsical pubs of interwar years win Grade II listing

When an Israeli property developer took a wrecking ball to the Carlton Tavern pub in Kilburn earlier this year, little can they have imagined that Westminster Council would insist that they rebuild the 1920s boozer exactly as it was, brick by precious brick. Between 1918 and 1939 breweries rebuilt thousands of pubs, spurred on by the need to appeal beyond their usual male clientele and leave behind the image of drunkenness Read more [...]
