Plans to convert an empty listed building in the centre of Alnwick into a crêperie and apartments have been submitted to the county council. Cuts blamed as Hartlepool listed among most-deprived areas in UK

Council bosses have turned their fire on the Government after new figures showed Hartlepool has one of the highest proportions of deprived areas in the country. The Department for Communities and Local Government English Indices of Deprivation 2015 report includes a table of the 20 local authority districts with the highest proportion of neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10 per cent nationally, which places Hartlepool at number 10. Six members of a drug gang - including four men from London and Banstead, Surrey - have been jailed after police uncovered a £5.2 million cannabis farm at a Grade II-listed stately home in a quiet Cumbrian village.
