English pubs awarded Grade II listed building status

Twenty-one pubs across England built between the two world wars are being awarded Grade II listed status.

Historic England says the pubs that have been chosen represent a fascinating time in British history.

One is the Royal Oak in East London – which has been the backdrop for lots of filming, including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the TV series Goodnight Sweetheart.

Liverpool pub listed as part of government protection drive

A Liverpool pub has been listed for protection by the government. The Wheatsheaf, in St Helens, was selected as one of 21 inter-war pubs as part of a project by Historic England. The watering hole has been given Grade II listed status and recognised as one of the pubs throughout the country that helped change the image of drunkenness associated with pubs.
