First look: does London’s latest skyscraper Walkie the Talkie?

The episode seemed to confirm its reputation as a 177-metre-tall robotic bruiser photo-bombing tourist snaps of Tower Bridge and aggressively elbowing its way through the skyline. Its mushrooming shape, with office floors that get ever more vast towards the top, is calculated to more fully exploit the views and the higher rents that come with them. It has been described as a diagram of developer greed.Positioned, contrary to the City Corporation’s own policies, outside the defined cluster of tall Read more [...]

Playing by the rules

We fell foul of these rules when we lived in our flat, again, thanks to our neighbours. They reported our 'monstrosity' of a garden shed to the local council. Like most people, we didn't realise planning permission was required for the shed because our home was a flat - all our neighbours with a house could put up a shed, but we couldn't. We had to apply for retrospective planning permission, which was granted, but it was a shock to realise that the planning rules are so bizarre. In some Read more [...]

House & Home

Last week, I explained the nightmare I’ve been having getting permission to alter my leasehold flat, despite owning half the freehold to the building, thanks to nasty neighbours. Owning a flat has other disadvantages because flats (and maisonettes), unlike most houses, don’t have permitted development (PD) rights. PD means you can do certain work, such as extensions and loft conversions, without planning permission, as long as the work complies with the PD rules. We Read more [...]

AA profits tumble in maiden results as listed company

Today’s results “demonstrate the stability and hugely cash-generative characteristics of this business,” said Mr Mackenzie. “Since arriving at the AA less than three months ago, the new executive team has focused on getting to know the business in detail, assessing the business operations and infrastructure and developing the strategy for future long-term growth. Progress has been made on all fronts but there is more to be done.” The company acknowledged in the results Read more [...]

From the archive, 23 September 1980: Open war as Iraq bombs Iran

The border conflict between Iraq and Iran turned into a full-scale war yesterday after both sides bombed each other’s airbases and clashed repeatedly on the ground and at sea along the 720-mile frontier. Iraqi jet fighters swept deep into Iran for the second time in less than 12 hours with a night-time bombing run over seven blacked-out Iranian airfields and early-warning radar stations. Iraq also threatened to extend the war to the strategic Hormuz Straits. Nearly one third Read more [...]

Chinese whispers send London-listed miners down £9bn

A flicker of doubt over the growth of the Chinese economy wiped £9 billion off the value of London’s largest miners yesterday and sent commodities to a five-year low. Investors ditched mining stocks after the Chinese finance minister played down the prospect of economic stimulus, despite the lowering of growth forecasts. The Communist party is targeting 7.5 per cent growth this year and analysts fear that any deviation from that will have a drastic impact on the price of raw materials such as Read more [...]
