Latin Rite Group Listed Among Haters

What do the Aryan Nations, the Ku Klux Klan and the home of Spokane’s Singing Nuns have in common? They’re all on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s map of “hate groups” in the Northwest. Mount St. Michael, home to a Latin Rite or Tridentine Catholic church, school and convent north of Spokane, has been listed since 2006 by the law center as a radical traditional Catholic group and accused Read more [...]

20 Percent of This UES Building Is For Sale, and Here’s Why

Since December, five homeowners at 531 East 88th Street in Yorkville—a prewar 25-unit building—have put their apartments on the market. Why? Because a waste transfer station located along the East River at 91st Street, set for completion in 2015, is going to reduce quality of life by luring round-the-clock garbage trucks, emitting gross smells of trash and gas, and generally jacking up traffic in the typically quiet Upper East Side neighborhood. At least, that's what tenants who want out of Read more [...]

SXSW 2013: setting the scene in Austin, Texas

It’s difficult to know when, why and how SXSW became so darn big. Maybe it was the whole Twitter thing (the social media service bursting out of the blocks here in 2007), but that alone doesn’t explain why this 10 day springtime event in the heart of Lone Star state has become such a huge draw for so many. There are 5,000 events listed in the official schedule and there’s probably as many again fringe and unofficial events, ranging from gigs in people’s backyards out in the wilds of east Read more [...]

Homes For Sale in Low Supply

The supply of homes for sale is still unusually tight as the spring buying season opens,  turning up the heat on already-rising prices. The number of homes listed for sale on real estate website Zillow was down almost 17% in late February vs. a year earlier. In some California markets, it was down more than 40%.  The supply crunch is likely to last all year, says IHS Global Insight economist Patrick Newport. "We're still not building enough homes." The U.S. is creating about 1.1 million new households Read more [...]

The Fukushima Nightmare

In the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster that struck Japan in March 2011 and killed about 16,000 people, this medley of ghost towns and populated oases in the northeast captures the imbalance, red tape, and confusion that afflict the region—and the nation—two years on. The government says the plant is “stable.” That water is keeping the reactors cool. That the plant no longer emits significant amounts of radiation. That authorities are “doing our best” to decontaminate Read more [...]
