Formaldehyde listed as cancer-causing

WASHINGTON — Formaldehyde, a chemical widely used in industrial processes, and aristolochic acids, a family of substances found in some herbal remedies, have been added to the government's official list of known human carcinogens, officials said Friday. Six other substances, including styrene, which is used to make coffee cups and food containers, among other products, are considered to be "reasonably anticipated" to be a human carcinogen, according to the Report on Carcinogens, which was Read more [...]

The English Heritage Angel Awards

I was intrigued to hear of the passion that led the six people who make up the congregation of St Andrew, Kirby Grindalythe in Ryedale, to raise enough money to restore the 12th-century tower, roof and stained glass of this Grade II* listed church, eulogised by Sir John Betjeman as one of the nation’s finest. We also heard of St Mark’s, a jewel-like Grade II listed chapel at Ten Mile Bank in Norfolk, little changed since it was built in 1846. The original pulpit and poppyhead Read more [...]

Four English-based runners will feature in the two valuable Pattern races scheduled to take place at Cork tomorrow. One of the quartet, Polly's Mark, is among a nine-strong field for the Group Three Kerry Group Noblesse Stakes. The Clive Cox-trained four-year-old rarely runs a bad race and has already finished second in two Listed events this term.Nonetheless, the home defence is strong. Here are some of the most interesting listings in Irvine, both on the largest and the smallest ends of the spectrum. The smallest property currently listed in Irvine is a 471-square-foot, one-bedroom condo at 168 Lemon Grove in the Orangetree community. The home is listed by Robert Choi of Coldwell Banker for $200,000 and is an equity sale. Even though it is the smallest property currently being actively marketed, it is not the least expensive. Formaldehyde listed as human carcinogen

WASHINGTON, June 10 (UPI) -- Formaldehyde has been added to the U.S. government's Report on Carcinogens, which identifies agents that may increase the risk of cancer, officials say. "There is now sufficient evidence from studies in humans to show that individuals with higher measures of exposure to formaldehyde are at increased risk for certain types of rare cancers, including nasopharyngeal ( the upper part of the throat behind the nose), sinonasal, as well as a specific cancer of the white Read more [...]

Napa’s Williams Smith house preserved and restored

Partially concealed from view by two large late-1800s magnolia trees is Napa’s stately and elegant 1870s Williams Smith house. This classic Second Empire style residence and National Register of Historic Places property was lovingly returned to its former glory by the caring hand and meticulous eye of the late Doris Dawson. Today, this First street residence stands as grandly as it did when new. However, most passers-by are unaware of all that went into Read more [...]

Janet McAllister: A festival both ancient and new

Seven years ago, I wanted to use the word "Matariki" in a feature article but wasn't allowed, as my then editor had never heard of the Maori New Year. To be honest, I had first heard of it myself only a year or so before. Now, until July 4, we're in the midst of a festival celebrated across the country; over 60 events are listed on the Auckland Council's Matariki website alone, including concerts, plays, storytelling, art, talks, Read more [...]

Lords should look before they leap

Mr Melmotte in the ecstasy of his enthusiasm lifted up both his hands over his head. “Without unanimity we can do – nothing . . . Unanimity should be printed everywhere about a boardroom. It should, indeed.”

The Way We Live Now,
