The town’s former mayor Jim Sells is the man who currently owns the real estate, which is about 40 miles from Atlanta. Sells explained in an interview with Buzzfeed that Grantville was once sustained by a thriving textile industry but that it was hit hard by the recession now relies on tourism.

“[The] downtown stayed dead besides a small business here or there,” Sells said. “Tourism became our industry.

“Somebody with a vision and a skill set can do something with this beautiful historic downtown and do something with it.”
