A judge has agreed to adjourn the case against two companies following the sudden collapse of a Brighouse hotel balcony last year.

Casa Events Limited and Castelite Limited have been charged with health and safety breaches after Casa Hotel owner Jack McDaid and four women were injured in the incident back in February 2013.

It was reported at the time of the collapse that Mr McDaid had been showing the women around a bridal suite at the hotel on Elland Road when the balcony collapsed onto the patio area three metres below.

The case against the two companies was listed for a preliminary hearing before Judge David Hatton QC at Bradford Crown Court today but after hearing submissions from counsel he agreed to an adjournment until a plea and case management hearing on November 12.

Four of the five people were seriously hurt in the incident.

A major rescue operation was launched. Police, fire crews and up to eight ambulances were called to Casa.

Police closed Elland Road from the junction with Brookfoot Lane while the incident was dealt with.

A fire crew from Brighouse was asked to remove a fence to aid the rescue operation.

Hotel owner Mr McDaid was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with head injuries, by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Other casualties were taken to hospital in Huddersfield by road.
