National Night Out set for Aug. 2 at McCollum Park

EVERETT — Join your neighbors and learn the latest in crime prevention during this year’s National Night Out Against Crime event from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Sponsored by the Snohomish County Executive’s Office in partnership with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, local police and fire departments and area nonprofits, the annual event will feature free food, face painting, games and more, including live music by Trainwreck, a country-rock band from Stanwood. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to prevent crime in their neighborhood and hear what local law enforcement is doing to reduce crime and protect families.

Comedian Foxx to perform with Voices of the Village

ARLINGTON — Voices of the Village, a local 24-member performance group of developmentally disabled individuals, will present a benefit concert from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7 at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center.

Also appearing on the program will be stand-up comedian and motivational speaker Al Foxx, who was told after a motorcycle wreck that he would never walk or talk normally or drive a car again. Today, he drives to local speaking engagements, limps on stage and gets paid to share his humorous insights.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under and $35 for families. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at voicesamongus.eventbrite.com. Concert proceeds benefit Village Community Services’ Voices of the Village performance ensemble, Friday Music and Evening with the Arts programs.

Port plans Rudders and Wheels boat and car show

EVERETT — The Port of Everett is gathering entries for its Rudders and Wheels classic boat and car show that will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at the 12th Street marina near Waterfront Center.

Check-in begins at 11 a.m. with public judging until 2 p.m. and awards given at 3 p.m. A sock hop will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

Registration is $20 per boat or car and is available starting Aug. 1 at Harbor Marine through the day of the event. Download a registration form at tinyurl.com/RuddersWheels and submit it with a check to Harbor Marine at W. Marine View Drive and 10th Street.

Brown-bag lunch series tackles drug-free workplace

TULALIP — Laura Moody of Sound Drug Testing will conduct a workshop for Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce members and their guests on how to create a drug-free workplace.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, learn about services available to businesses and what steps business owners need to take in order to implement an effective drug policy and program for their business.

Brown-bag lunch seminars are free to chamber members and $5 for guests. They are held in the conference room at the chamber office, 8825 34th Ave. NE, Suite C, Tulalip.

Summer networking and EASC’s official roll-out

MUKILTEO — Register now for the most anticipated networking event of the summer as Economic Alliance Snohomish County rolls out the business plan that resulted from the merger of the Snohomish County Economic Development Council and the Everett Area and South Snohomish County chambers of commerce.

Troy McClelland, president and chief executive officer of EASC, will make a brief presentation as he reveals the EASC business plan, which will include progress to the plan and the vision for Snohomish County. Admission is $40.

The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Future of Flight Strato Deck, 8415 Paine Field Blvd., Mukilteo.

Snohomish County Tourism Bureau needs brochure info

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau is asking for submissions of community events for fall 2011 through winter 2012 for its calendar of events brochure. The printed brochure is widely distributed and your event is listed on the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau’s website.

The deadline for entries is Saturday, Aug. 20, for events that run from October through March.

Seminar helps you deal with difficult people

EVERETT — Manpower will offer a free seminar Sept. 21 with approved HRCI credits for certification purposes on dealing with difficult people.

The way you deal with difficult people can make a situation better or much worse. Seminar leader Nicole Forward, a Vigilant Counsel training manager, specializes in training and conflict management. By the end of this seminar you will be able to name at least three ways to keep your cool when faced with a difficult person, use assertiveness skills, demonstrate verbal de-escalation techniques, identify four main reasons people become difficult, learn redirection techniques and succeed in difficult situations.
