PLANS to convert a town nightclub into new homes have been submitted to planning officials at Mid Suffolk District Council.

Proposals for the Maltings site, in Stowmarket, include converting Xcel Nightclub into 15 new houses, flats and maisonettes, comprising single studios and three bedroom town houses.

The conversion of the Grade II listed building will also include changes to the existing car park, to create shared open space and some private courtyards for the homes, as well as parking and bin storage.

Fourteen new additional flats and one existing unit will make up the site at the old Maltings building, in Stowmarket Road East, which was mostly re-built in the 1990s following a fire.

A statement submitted alongside the plans, by agent TW Gaze LLP, said: “The proposed scheme will remain both structurally and aesthetically to the current building design and structure. Identifying it’s previous use as a Maltings, the importance was to prolong this visual and architectural example of Stowmarket history, within the urban fabric.”

The applicant also aims to work alongside the Pickerel Project to redevelop a section of the river walk.

The application was submitted at the beginning of March and public consultation is now open until April 6. Planning officials aim to reach a decision by June.

The Xcel complex remains open as usual.
