AN application to improve a “blot on the townscape” of Christchurch has been recommended for approval by borough planning officers.

The proposal to transform the former Royal Mail sorting office in Wick Lane would see a variety of shops, houses, flats and offices built on the dilapidated site.

Architects Evans and Traves LLP have submitted the scheme on behalf of Libra Homes Ltd, which bought the site last year to build 10 cottages, four flats, three shops and office space.

The existing building will be demolished with the three retail units situated nearest the town centre end of Wick Lanes and the 10 cottages arranged around a courtyard stretching into Regent Way.

Concerns have been raised about the development proving too extensive for the area but planning officers believe it will make a “positive” contribution to the existing urban development.

They say it will preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area and protect the setting of listed buildings on Wick Lane.

During the planning process an evaluation of the land saw a variety of medieval and post-medieval artefacts found in trenches.

And although archaeologists at Dorset County Council say significant finds are considered unlikely, a record has been made of the remains.

Christchurch Local History Society said every effort should be made to ensure as much information as possible is obtained from the site because it falls within the walls of the Royal Saxon Burgh.

The application is due to go to Christchurch planning committee on January 6.
