WELLINGTON, Nov 30 (Xinhua) — The World Health Organisation has recently released the results of health surveys on world obesity, and the study showed Pacific Island countries make up most of the top 10 list of the world’s fattest countries, reported China’s Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.

Nauru, Tokelau and American Samoa have been listed as the most overweight and obese countries in the world this year.

Among other countries are the United States, Germany, Egypt, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel, Croatia and United Kingdom.

According to recent World Health Organisation statistics, 93.5 percent of the population in each country is overweight and 75 percent in each country is obese.

Dr Temo Waqanivaleu from the WHO South Pacific office said that Pacific people have become less active and their diets have changed.

“There is much more dependence now on processed foods than the local traditional foods.

The processed foods are high in fat, salt and sugar which have led to the high obesity rate and an increase in cases of diabetes and high blood pressure,” Dr Waqanivaleu said.
