Iconic Grade I listed property on sale for £1.15m

One of Beverley’s most historically significant properties is still on the market, but has attracted plenty of interest recently.

The Bar House, which is on sale for £1.15million, is part of the town’s medieval North Bar. It is believed to be the only Grade I listed private residence in the historic market town.

The Bar House, in the heart of the Georgian quarter, is detailed by Nikolaus Pevsner in his book York and the East Riding and was built in the late 17th and early 18th century for the Warton family before a makeover by William Hawe in 1866. Its most unusual aspect is a room incorporated within North Bar, the only remaining medieval gateway into Beverley and the only brick built Bar in England. The property’s other claim to fame is that it was the home of artists Fred and Mary Dawson Elwell between 1916 and 1958. Some of their paintings depict views of the magnificent 3,400 sq ft home. The Bar House offers versatile accommodation having three/four bedrooms and is an absolute treasure trove of a property with stunning gardens. The property, on sale with Quick and Clarke estate agents, still has many original features, including fireplaces and ceiling cornices, but of particular note are the sash windows along with working shutters, intricate ceiling detail and the impressive staircase and landing area.
