University of Akron for sale? Craigslist ad pulled after few hours

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron, which is cutting expenses and laying off employees to reduce a $60 million deficit, was listed for sale on Craigslist Tuesday night.

The ad, which indicated that it was posted by President Scott Scarborough, was taken down from the site after a few hours, but that was long enough for people to save it and share on social media. It was apparently posted by a recent UA grad.

“It is with a heavy heart I have to share with you all that the University of Akron will be closing,” the ad said. “I take no great pride in this but please know I’ve done all I can. By eliminating the baseball team, closing facilities, outsourcing dining, laying off employees, and refusing to put a watchable football team on the field, we have done all we can. All we can short of adding ‘fees’ to upper level courses, gave that a shot and it didn’t pan out.

The university’s property provides great opportunities for those interested in opening a hotel, start a semi-pro football team or technical school, it said. The property’s condition was listed as “like new.”

“Maybe you’re an established school (Kent, Cleveland State, Ohio State?) that wants a new branch campus, let’s talk. This property could certainly be whatever you desire!” it said.

Property highlights included EJ Thomas Hall, which closed its ticket office Tuesday after all employees were laid off, Quaker Square and the Goodyear Polymer Center.

Among the descriptions was this of InfoCision Stadium:

“This stadium has only seen a handful of wins and a handful of people since opening day. Opened in 2009 due to the fact that we confused football with futbal it has hardly been used. Like new condition.”

The ad said Scarborough would keep Buchtel Hall, which houses his office.

The asking price is $40 million or the best offer.

“Trades too,” it says. “Since I moved here I’ve really got into the Black Keys and would love to trade the campus for an El Camino.”
