The Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke at Mountbatten House have been classified as an historic park and garden

Two post-war office buildings in Hampshire have been given Grade II-listed status by English Heritage.

Mountbatten House, formerly Gateway House and its roof gardens, The Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke, have both been recognised.

The gardens have been classified as an historic park and garden.

IBM Pilot Head Office in Cosham, Portsmouth, now known as Lynx House, has also been recognised for its innovative design.

Built between 1970 and 1971, it was designed by Foster Associates.

Arup and Associates, led by Peter Foggo, designed Mountbatten House which was built between 1974 and 1976.

The move comes after a project by the heritage body to assess commercial buildings dating from 1964 to 1984.

Another 12 buildings, including Bank House in Leeds and 30 Cannon Street in London, have also been added to the National Heritage List.

Roger Bowdler, of English Heritage, said the offices listed showed how architecture has adapted to “radical changes in how we work”.

They showed how “the open-plan working space for computer-led work came about, and how architects responded to the need for lettable, attractive spaces with ingenuity and a deep understanding of human needs”.
