ITV scores cricket World Cup highlights

ITV will show highlights of all of England’s games in the cricket World Cup which begins next month.

Media regulator Ofcom said on Tuesday that England’s games, including the fixture against Scotland, will be shown on the main channel as well as the semi-final and final, according to a joint proposal from ITV and Sky.

Other games, including Scotland’s remaining matches, will be shown on sister channel ITV4.

Live coverage of the tournament, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, will be broadcast on Sky Sports, which is rebranding its Sky Sports 2 channel as Sky Sports World Cup for its duration between 14 February and 29 March.

The ITV highlights will be shown at 10pm each night and last between 60 and 90 minutes, according to an Ofcom consultation document published on Tuesday.

Channel 5 has been the traditional home of England highlights in recent years, but ITV is not a complete stranger to cricket, having shown highlights of the Indian Premier League.

ITV has bagged the rights after the BBC showed TV highlights of the last two cricket World Cups, in Bangladesh and India in 2011 and the Caribbean in 2007. It was the first cricket on BBC TV for nine years.

The BBC will broadcast live radio commentary of the tournament in Test Match Special, on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and on long wave Radio 4.

A spokesman for ITV confirmed the proposals but said the broadcaster would not comment further until the Ofcom consultation had come to an end.

The Ofcom investigation is a routine consultation sparked by the inclusion of the cricket World Cup on the group of listed events included in the 1996 Broadcasting Act.

Ofcom’s consent is required for exclusive live coverage of such events. Approval in this instance is expected to be a formality but is not guaranteed.

A similar consultation was launched earlier this year ahead of the BBC’s broadcast of the rugby union Six Nations.

Ofcom has received a request from Sky for consent to broadcast exclusive live coverage of the finals, semi-finals and matches involving home teams in the tournament.

Separately, ITV has announced its return to Saturday night boxing with live coverage of super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton’s first title defence against Chris Avalos. The undercard will be broadcast on ITV4.

It will be the first world championship match staged in the UK to be broadcast on free-to-air television on one of the five main channels since Carl Froch beat Jean Pascal for the WBC super middleweight title in 2008.

The World Cup will begin with New Zealand v Sri Lanka in Christchurch on 14 February, with England’s opening game against Australia in Melbourne the same day.
