Prior to commissioning Richard Neutra in 1956, the Kilbury family interviewed equally famous Usonian designer Frank Lloyd Wright for the project of building their hillside residence in Palos Verdes Estates.
After the latter architect was deemed too expensive, the former, who was willing to work within the family’s budget, stepped in to handle the job.
To create a home unique to the Kilburys, Neutra had each member of the family take a pen to paper to describe what elements constituted the perfect home, but asked that they not share their thoughts with one another, according to Gerard Bisignano of Vista Sotheby’s International Realty.
Nuetra later became so fond of the residence, which was captured by the lens of celebrated architectural photographer Julius Shulmun, that he would show up to the property unannounced, sometimes with clients and sometimes without, often to nap or spend the night.
