PORTSMOUTH — The Pearl, an historic former church turned function hall, is for sale, according to a local Realtor.

The Pearl Street church was built in 1858 by the Free Will Baptist Congregation and was enlarged in 1868 with the addition of an entry bay and steeple, according to a press release. In 1915, black members of the Seaman’s Aid Society purchased the structure to be used as the People’s Baptist Church, the first and only black congregation in New Hampshire, according to the release. The church had an active congregation for 125 years and was the heart of black Portsmouth’s social, political and spiritual life.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached at the church on Oct. 26, 1952, while a divinity student at Boston University. His sermon was titled “Going Forward by Going Backward.”

The Pearl is on the state and national registries of historic places.

The congregation grew and moved to a larger location in 1984, and the building was first leased to an upscale and popular French restaurant.

Gary Dodds, current owner of The Pearl, purchased the building in 2005, renovated it to add many modern amenities and increased functionality, and bring the interior back to more closely resemble the original floor plan. Today, it is used for wedding receptions, corporate events and private parties as well as many public events such as comedy nights and dance nights.

Wedding ceremonies and receptions can range from 50 to 130 guests and the historic site also offers the ease of on-site catering, bartending, linens and other necessities. The comedy nights have featured comedians from Las Vegas, New York and Atlantic City.

The building also has two apartments on the first floor.

The building is listed with Lili Patch, a Realtor with Better Homes Gardens | The Masiello Group of Portsmouth. She can be reached by calling 520-6698, 430-9995 or on the web at www.Lilipatch.com.
