TRAINER Evan Williams is eyeing Sandown’s Listed 32Red.com Mares’ Hurdle on Saturday for Prima Porta, who was not beaten far behind Quevega at the Cheltenham Festival and ran the smart Cockney Sparrow closely last time.

A seven-year-old daughter of American Post, Prima Porta joined Williams from John Hammond and has won three time since the switch.

She was sent off a 40-1 chance for the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle (registered as the David Nicholson) at Cheltenham and ran with credit, finishing eight lengths off Quevega in sixth.

She returned this season in a Listed event at Wetherby in November and was a length-and-a-quarter second to Cockney Sparrow, who was then second to My Tent Or Yours in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth at Newcastle.

“Prima Porta has improved a lot this year, notably when sixth at the Cheltenham Festival behind the mighty Quevega,” said Williams, speaking to the Racing Football Outlook for a stable tour in this week’s edition.

“She has had one run this term, when second to Cockney Sparrow in a Listed hurdle at Wetherby. We’ll stick to hurdles for the time being and there is a Listed mares’ race over two and a half miles at Sandown on Saturday for her.”
