There’s been a lot of media coverage and indeed, robust debate about the listing this week of Preston Bus Station by culture minister Ed Vaizey.

The decision recognises the building’s architectural significance but should we really be that surprised by the announcement?

A quick check of the Preston City council website reveals that there are in the region of 770 individual listed buildings and structures in Preston.

The list, which is available to download from the Council website, highlights the obvious gems such as the Harris Museum and Library but also details some less obvious choices. There are water fountains, railings, bridges, street lamps and a number of churches. One of the most intriguing things on the list is a ‘Ha-ha’ (25m south and west of Ashton House). It’s a turfed ditch with a supporting wall apparently!
