But darning, knitting and being able to bake fresh bread are said to be no longer necessary for everyday life.

A spokesman for touch-typing course www.kaz-type.com, which conducted the poll, said: “Technology is wiping out some of those skills as gadgets can now do them for us.”

The spokesman stressed just how important it is to know how to use the internet.

But cooking, number six in the poll, is among older skills still considered important.

Touch-typing is at number 15 as it is a handy skill to have when operating a computer.
