For the past 78 years, the NEWS of Delaware County, in one version or another, has covered Delaware County and its people. Each week, we are highlighting stories of interest that appeared in your local newspaper. The following item appeared May 10, 1976, in the NEWS of Delaware County.

“New Land, New Covenant — Man and Spirit in ‘76,” an oratorio composed especially for the Bicentennial year, was presented at two area churches in May.

The premiere performance will be at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, which commissioned the work by Howard Hanson and Dr. Howard Clark Kee. In a rare ecumenical effort, the Bryn Mawr choirs joined the choirs of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia for a production of the oratorio on May 12.

The annual Festival of Art at the Bryn Mawr church, ran through May 9, further emphasizing the historical theme. Bicentennial-oriented art works were shown in the church’s activities building.

Delaware County students in more than 100 public, private and parochial schools displayed colonial projects at a Bicentennial School Fair May 11-13 at the Dun Center, Concord Road, Feltonville.

The exhibits, which were open for public inspection each of the three days include original drama, arts and crafts, literary forms, games, dances, musical activities, science and slide shows.

The Bicentennial Fair is co-sponsored by the Delaware County Bicentennial Commission and the Bicentennial Schools Coordinating Committee of the Intermediate Unit.

Throughout the weekend, special events in connection with the exhibits were presented. Included in Friday’s schedule was an original film “Footsteps Into the Past” and a program, “A Fight for Freedom” at 8 p.m.

There was also a slide program May 12 at 2 p.m., a square dance program at 4 p.m., and a puppet show at 5 p.m.

The schedule May 13 included a musical salute to the Bicentennial.
