CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – A short meeting is a good meeting, according to community members in Carolina Beach.
Town leaders called a special meeting Monday, and even rescheduled it to the evening to make it easier for people to attend.
The 7:00 p.m. meeting didn’t last more than 15 minutes, and Mayor Bob Lewis said the two issues on the agenda didn’t require much debate.
Lifeguards in Carolina Beach will be competing in a national competition this month and the town will front $10,000 to help get them there. Lewis said the community has already raised roughly $8,500 and the money will be paid back to the town.
“We have lifeguards and we need to support them,” said Lewis.
The agenda for Monday’s special meeting also listed consideration of up to $30,000 for a dragon boat regatta to be held in October. Lewis said prior to the meeting that the amount was an early estimate and the town was actually considering closer to $4,500.
That cost could be covered by Tourism Development Authority money, according to Lewis but he said the decision was to keep the town uninvolved financially and only support it through services.
There are already more than a dozen teams signed up for the event, according to Lewis. The regatta is scheduled for the last weekend in October.
