SOCCER

Arsenal plays up vs. U-18s

On Saturday, the U-16 Helena Arsenal took on a challenge when they played two U-18 teams.

In the first game, they met Great Falls. Helena played even for the first 10 minutes. Then the superior ball control and offense of the older girls took over. Great Falls executed a quick-strike offense with breakaway sprints from midfield. By halftime, Great Falls had a 4-0 advantage.

Coach Bob Decker inspired Helena during the break to not be intimidated. Arsenal played the second half more aggressively and played the older girls even for the last 40 minutes. Keyara McCarthy recorded 20 saves for Helena.

In the second game, the girls played many of their high school teammates when they met the Helena U-18 Arsenal team. Once more, experience was difficult to overcome as the older girls controlled the ball with crisp, accurate passing.

By half, the U-16 girls again found themselves down 4-0 on two goals by Izzy Clinch and one each by Nicolette Kleppelid and Lena Tupper. The second half found the younger girls inspired once more and Keyara McCarthy broke through the U-18 defense to score off a Jasmin Waples assist. Later in the half, the U-16 girls had several more shots on goal as they were able to at least challenge their older rivals in a 4-1 loss.
