A decade ago, a group of New Hope residents decided it was time the unique riverside community should commemorate its rich heritage of diversity and tolerance.

And so, in 2003, New Hope Celebrates was born.

Beginning May 11, the week-long event will highlight the LGBTA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allies) communities in both the Bucks County town and across the Delaware River in Lambertville, N.J.

“It amazes me that not only has it been 10 years since inception, but that it took several hundred years prior to begin such a tradition in an area which lauds a rich and colorful LGBTA past and present,” said Daniel Brooks, founder and president of the event.

In honor of the noteworthy anniversary, NHC is launching a new interactive website — www.retro-scope.com, Brooks said. Anyone is free to contribute images, artifacts, videos or stories that exhibit connections to people, places and memories of LGBTA life in the Bucks County area over the past century.

“We see our history literally being thrown into trash cans every time a member of our community passes away,” Brooks said in a statement. “Retro-Scope is a living testimonial to all of these photos and artifacts,” he added.

The long-term goal of the site is to create a permanent online museum.

A wide range of activities and entertainment events are planned for the week, including the wildly popular Pride parade on Saturday. This year the theme is “Pride Through the Decades,” featuring marching bands, floats, gay pride supporters and special interest groups.

“With the 10th anniversary,” said parade co-coordinator Jennifer Wohl, “we expect to outdo ourselves in colorful parade presentations.”

A number of events will take place at the Bucks County Playhouse, including a screening of “I Remember Mother,” a documentary about New Hope’s beloved gay community member and entertainer, Josie “Mother” Cavalucci.

All the Pride week activities and links to specific events are listed at www.newhopecelebrates.com.
