Picatinny Arsenal looking seeking rental housing for service members and their … – The Star-Ledger

The dedication cermony for the 2nd Lt. John T. Wroblewski Pyrotechnics Research Tecnology Complex at Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township was held on Sept. 8, 2010.

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP — Officials at the Picatinny Arsenal are reaching out to local homeowners, landlords and real estate agencies to find rental housing for Picatinny personnel.

“Specifically, we are looking for three- and four-bedroom houses” suitable for families, housing specialist Eli Thomas said. “There are tons of apartment complexes with one- or two-bedroom units, but not as many houses available.”

Picatinny officials are asking homeowners and others to contact the Picatinny housing office if they know of available properties that can be rented to military personnel and their families assigned to the area.

Thomas said many arriving service members are expected during the summer, a peak time for military reassignments.

Not enough housing is available at the base, and servicemen and women get a housing allowance to live elsewhere, Thomas said. Properties located within 20 miles of Picatinny are needed.

Rental rates in the Rockaway area are “reasonable” for service members and setting them up with housing in advance enables them to get to work immediately “and not worry about having housing,” Thomas said.

All properties are subject to inspection prior to being listed for rental to service members. Properties may be listed for free. For additional information, contact Thomas at (973) 724-3506.
