Rappelling event helps Special Olympics

Special Olympics Hawai‘i is offering 120 adventure-seekers the chance to rappel 31 stories down the Sheraton Waikiki for its fourth annual “Over the Edge of Waikiki” fundraiser Saturday.

Spots will be reserved for individuals or groups that commit to raise a minimum of $1,000 in donations per rappel before the event. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and weigh less than 300 pounds.

To sign up, register online at www.specialolympicshawaii.org.

Start an “Over the Edge Team Extreme” by recruiting at least two other members to enjoy exclusive offers such as a reduced registration deposit and customized “Team Extreme” T-shirts with the team’s name. The team with the highest fundraising total will win a MinoHD high-definition video camera for each member, up to six. Teams of three or more people will receive a discounted deposit of $25.

Channel808.tv will be live-streaming from the drop zone at the Sheraton Waikiki all day.

All funds raised through “Over the Edge of Waikiki” will support Special Olympics Hawai‘i’s Holiday Classic, held every December at Joint Base Hickam-Pearl Harbor and Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay. The event allows athletes from around the state to compete in basketball, bowling and bocce ball.

The local rappelling event is conducted by Over the Edge, a North American-based company that specializes in unique fundraising events for nonprofit organizations. The staff includes fully trained professionals who have conducted more than 100 events over the last five years without a single injury or incident, according to Special Olympics Hawai‘i.

Even those who aren’t dropping off the edge of the hotel or backing one of the participants can still support Special Olympics Hawai‘i by making a donation at bit.ly/OTE2012.

Entries sought for city’s wreath contest

“Kanikapila Kalikimaka!” is the theme of the 27th Annual Holiday Wreath Contest.

The event, organized by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts, has three divisions: adults, youths ages 17 and younger, and wreaths that depict the theme.

A ribbon and monetary award will be given to the winners in each division. The first-place prize is $150, second place is $100 and third place is $75. A “best in show” winner will receive the Mayor’s Holly Award worth $200, while six Judges’ Choice Awards will win $25. Only one award will be presented to any one individual or group.

Judging will be based on workmanship, creativity and use of materials.

Wreaths in the theme category will be judged on the incorporation of the theme into the wreath.

Rules and entry forms are available online at www.honolulu.gov/moca and at any satellite city hall.

Entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 26 in the Lane Gallery of Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King St. No early or late entries will be accepted. Each entry must include a wreath contest entry form.
