Notre Dame to host events in Chicago

Kickoff for the Notre Dame-Miami football game is 6:30 p.m. Saturday (Central Daylight Time) at Soldier Field, but Notre Dame will host several days of events in Chicago before the game.

This weekend’s game is dubbed the Chicago Shamrock Series.

Most of the events are open to the general public, and many of them are free. All times listed are CDT.

Thursday

  • Academic panel discussions (free): 2 p.m., “Notre Dame Faculty in the Media”; 5 p.m., “International Development and U.S. Foreign Policy.” Events will be at the JW Marriott, 151 W. Adams St.

    Friday

  • Academic panel discussions (free): 10 a.m., “The Economy Now: A Roundtable of Notre Dame Economists,” discussion and QA; 2 p.m., “Religion in the Public Square.” Events will be at the JW Marriott.

  • 11 a.m.: Football luncheon at Navy Pier benefiting the ND Club of Chicago Scholarship Fund. Expected guest speakers include Brian Kelly, head football coach; the Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president; Jack Swarbrick, athletics director; and former players Tony Rice and Pat Terrell. Cost is $100 per person. Order tickets in advance at 312-922-4663.

  • 6 p.m.: Notre Dame pep rally at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. (Free)

    Saturday

  • 10 a.m.: Mass celebrated by the Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, at Holy Name Cathedral, 730 N. Wabash Ave.

  • 3:30 p.m. Notre Dame Band concert at Soldier Field. (Free) This will be on Stadium Green near the southeast corner of the stadium.

  • 6:30 p.m.: Kickoff, Notre Dame vs. Miami at Soldier Field

    There will be a Hammes Bookstore satellite store set up each day in a second-floor ballroom in the Marriott.

Extra South Shore trains

The South Shore Railroad plans to add an extra train for football fans to its Chicago-bound schedule on Saturday. The train will depart South Bend Airport at 1:30 p.m. EDT, making limited stops along the way and arriving at Museum Campus/11th St. stop (near Soldier Field) at 2:42 p.m. CDT.

The South Shore also will provide an extra eastbound train departing Museum Campus/11th Street about one hour after the end of Saturday’s game. The extra train will run nonstop to Hegewisch, then make all regular stops along the way to South Bend.
