Here’s a look at major events going on today through Sunday in the area, with events listed in order of the days that they occur.
FRIDAY
“A NIGHT IN EL BARRIO”: The “Free Fridays” Concert Series, Artwalk and The Latino Film Festival have teamed up for tonight’s Latin-themed event from 7 to 10 with musical acts performing around downtown including Tropix at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza (8 to 10 p.m.), and plenty of Latin-themed artworks in downtown galleries and venues.
SPECTICAST – “THE ROLLING STONES, LIVE IN TEXAS ’78”: This concert film capturing the British group’s performances on its 1978 U.S. tour, will be screened on the Phillips Center’s main stage, starting at 7:30 tonight.
SATURDAY
RASCAL FLATTS: The country hit-makers perform songs from their latest album, “Changed,” as well as old favorites at the O’Connell Center on Saturday. The 7 p.m. show also features Little Big Town and Eli Young Band. Tickets are -$32.25 to $52.25. Call the University Box Office at 392-1653 or Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 for tickets.
FLORIDA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: The museum opens two exhibits on Saturday with special activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Peanuts … Naturally, Charlie Brown and Friends Explore Nature” is a nationally touring exhibit that has Snoopy and gang exploring nature with comic strips, videos and interactive stations. Admission is $4 adults, $3.50 for Florida residents, seniors and college students; and $3 for ages 3-17. Also opening Saturday is the free, temporary exhibit, “Water – Discovering and Sharing Solutions,” which illustrates why water is crucial and explains UF research involving water, invasive plants and animals.
ART FESTIVAL AT THORNEBROOK: The 28th annual Art Festival at Thornebrook includes art works for sale from 110 artists as well as entertainment, food and children’s activities on Saturday and Sunday at Thornebrook Village, 2441 NW 43rd St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
PRIDE DAYS 2012 PARADE AND FESTIVAL: The annual Pride Parade down West University Avenue starts at Seventh Street and proceeds east to Bo Diddley Community Plaza starting at noon. The annual festival, which follows from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, features dozens of local musical acts and vendors at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza, 111 E. University Ave. Admission is Free. 24TH ANNUAL FAMILY LITERACY FESTIVAL: This family event at the Headquarters library features performance groups, literacy displays, free books for children and other activities from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. ART FESTIVAL AT THORNEBROOK: The event at Thornebrook Villages continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
SPHINX VIRTUOSI WITH CATALYST QUARTET: Soloist alumni from the Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players perform with the Catalyst Quarter, 2 p.m. Sunday, University Auditorium, UF campus. Tickets are $15-$25, $10 students, available at the door or by calling 392-2787.
