San Francisco listed No. 1 in green services

Think eco-friendly jobs are only in the white-collar workplace? Guess again.

While San Francisco likes to think of itself as a green environment, the website Thumbtack compiled a report that backs up that claim. The South of Market-based company said San Francisco has the highest number of environmentally conscious service professionals of any big city in the U.S.

The website used data from the more than 260,000 service professionals listed on Thumbtack to show where it’s easiest to hire green, calculating the prevalence of sustainable service options in 39 of the country’s 50 largest cities.

Thumbtack data analyst Alex Steiner said that through the website, users can book a house cleaner who uses only organic supplies or hire a green architect to work on their homes. Professionals listed on the website are vetted for a variety of factors.

Operations Manager Seth Reohl of Zen Home, an eco-friendly San Francisco cleaning service, said every product and cleaning supply the company uses is nontoxic and natural.

“Our service is like a spa treatment for your home,” Reohl said. “It’s a higher end of cleaning, and we take public transportation to our customer’s home to reduce the carbon footprint.”

The service and products are slightly more expensive, but they help create a comfortable environment, Reohl added.

After San Francisco, San Jose was ranked second and Oakland third on the Thumbtack list.

“The City bleeds green,” Steiner said. “San Francisco had the second-highest concentration of green architects and the fifth-highest concentration of solar panel installers.”
