So you think you are in great shape? Do you want to help out a local non-profit organization?
If you answered yes to either questions, then you need to register to compete in the Sugar Creek Swim Club’s Fourth Annual Sprint Triathlon. The event will take place Aug. 4 starting and ending at Milligan Park.
The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the local USA Swim Club.
“What people don’t realize is that we are one of the premiere swim clubs in the state of Indiana,” said Nicole Maxwell, who is the event chairman. “When there are events going on at the IU Natatorium like the Olympic Trials which are going on this year they contact us and ask us to use our facilities and people to run state sanctioned swim meets. That brings in thousands of people to our community and we have usually have three-day events so we sell out the local hotels and fill the local restaurants. It’s not like a one-day event and everyone goes home. We do a lot of bring in a lot of business to the community.”
Maxwell said SCSC is usually asked to host at least one state event a year and then also is the host site for four or five invitationals annually.
Last year the event drew 75 competitors after drawing 100 in 2010. The goal is to get that figure back to 100 this year.
The winning male and female participant will each receive $100 in cash in addition to plaques, which are supplied by Top Line Athletics. New this year is a $100 cash prize to the winning team.
“We hope this will bring out more teams,” Maxwell said. “Teams can be comprised of two or three people.”
The event is broken into three parts: a 500 meter swim at the Crawfordsville Municipal Pool, a 13-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run.
“It’s a great event,” Maxwell said. “We have individuals and even families compete.”
The swimming portion begins at 8 a.m. Aug. 4. The bike ride will travel through the Athens Addition and then to Ladoga Road. The 3-mile run will take place in Milligan Park.
The event ends at the south shelter in the park where there will be live music and food.
One change this year is that the streets through the Athens Addition will not be completely closed to traffic. This year Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton and the organizers have worked to create a bike lane to help alleviate some of the inconveniences to those residents.
“It has never been our intention to cause hardships for people, we have just been trying to look out of the safety of the riders,” Maxwell said. “I think this is a good solution for everyone.”
Maxwell said the event is open to individuals of all ages.
In addition to looking for participants Maxwell is still searching for volunteers. Maxwell said it takes approximately 100 or more volunteers to pull off this event. About half the number comes from people who have connections to SCSC. The other half is needed from the community.
This year volunteers will receive a T-shirt and a canvas goody bag (donated by Hannum Insurance) filled with coupons and gifts. Cornett’s Comfort Shop is donating the athlete bags which will be filled with coupons, gifts and free samples.
“Last year we had about 100 gifts which were donated from area merchants to be raffled off as door prizes,” Maxwell said. “We are hoping for even more this year.”
For anyone interested in preparing for the event there is a weekly bike ride starting each Friday at 5 p.m. at Rotten Robbies. There are times listed at the Crawfordsville Aquatics Center for lap swimming. Anyone who is interested in triathlon specific training is encouraged to contact Maxwell at 765-366-9469 or email her at msnikkisea@aol.com.
Registration can be done at the SCSC website at www.scscswim.org and go to the events tab at the top and click to get to the entry form. Forms also will be available at the Park and Rec Center, Crawfordsville Aquatic Center, Athena Center or by seeing Barry Lewis at the Journal Review.
The cost is $45 per individual or $100 per team. After the registration deadline of Aug. 1 the cost will go up to $75 for individuals and $125 per team. Registrations will be accepted up until the time of the mandatory safety meeting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 4.
