Around Town: Head out to Winesburg and Wilmot today for fun outdoor events

As the leaves are just beginning to turn color on some trees, get out on this beautiful day and head to Winesburg for the annual FALL GATHERING organized by the Winesburg Business Association.

The 16th event in the heart of Holmes County begins with breakfast 7 to 10 a.m. at Zion Church. Crafters, antique dealers and entrepreneurs will be set up by 9 a.m. along the streets. Live music will be on the porch of the Grapevine Bed and Breakfast and at Heritage Park bandstand. Fun events include the annual husband-carrying contest or “Hubby-Back ride” and prizes will be awarded. Winesburg Historical Society will have a cake walk and will be open for tours. Benefit auction is at 3 p.m. and silent auction is 2 to 4 p.m. The famous ham and bean soup will be prepared in a 45-gallon iron kettle over an open fire. Winesburg Fire Station will have its chicken barbecue, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Another fun outdoor event today and Sunday is the annual WOODCARVING SHOW at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot. Each year, there are nearly 1,000 carvings, classes to attend, and vendors. Food, raffles and door prizes. Free and open to the public. For more information, call 877-359-5235.

BEACH CITY AMERICAN LEGION HALL POST 549, 125 Third Ave. NE, is having an all-you-can-eat Swiss steak dinner 4:30 to 7 p.m. today. THE PLAYERS GUILD, 1001 Market Ave. N, Canton, will hold open call auditions 2 to 5 p.m. today and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Callbacks are scheduled for Monday, beginning at 6 p.m. for their upcoming production of the drama, “A Few Good Men” by Aaron Sorkin. This audition is open to all races and nationalities. The roles call for adult men 17 years and older as well as adult females. Additionally, anyone with a military background is encouraged to audition.

CELEBRITY DAY OUT, a family-friendly fundraising event will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Club Legends at The Legends of Massillon, 2700 Augusta Drive SE, Massillon. Stars, food, music, games, prizes, including a special appearance from Matthew Underwood from Nickelodeon’s “Zoey 101,” who will be available for photos and autographs. All proceeds go toward sending Emily Bare to a national talent competition in Orlando. Tickets $5 at the door.

The Dalton Library is hosting PAWS TO READ 10 a.m. to noon today for children to have the opportunity to read to a registered therapy dog; a BOOK SNACK is at 3:45 p.m. Monday for children in grades 3-5 to discuss “Judy Moody” by Megan McDonald. THE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1951 noon luncheon, scheduled for Tuesday, has been  canceled because of the 60th reunion today. The class will meet again Oct. 18 and Nov. 15.
