Kendall Square Friendly Toast restaurant listed for sale (slide show)

The exterior of the Friendly Toast in Kendall Square. Its owners have put the funky diner and its Portsmouth, N.H. sister restaurant up for sale. The husband-and-wife restaurateurs are headed for the midwest, saying they have “fallen in love with Detroit.”

Quirky Kendall Square diner and bar The Friendly Toast is up for sale, along with its sister restaurant in Portsmouth, N.H.

A listing on the Bean Group real estate website says that the two locations are being offered as a package deal for $1.875 million, saying that their projected annual sales are over $3 million for the two locations.

The reason behind the sale? A change of scenery. Owner Melissa Jasper tells Seacoast Online, which first reported the listing, “My husband and I are ready for a new challenge and have fallen in love with Detroit. We will probably open a restaurant there if The Toasts sell.”

The restaurants are known for their over-the-top vintage décor, creative take on breakfast standards and extensive list of wacky cocktails.

By the time the 150-seat location in Kendall Square opened in the spring of 2009, the Portsmouth location had been an institution for almost 15 years—and each outpost has had its fair share of accolades, including a visit from ABC’s Good Morning America in 2010 when the show awarded the restaurants a fourth place prize in the competition for the Best Breakfast in America.
