Mid-valley 9/11 remembrance events

Several events are planned in the mid-valley for the 10th
anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. If you have an event

Restaurants to take part in Dining for
Troops

Once again area restaurants have agreed to participate in Dining
for Troops on Patriot Day, Sunday, Sept. 11. They will donate a
portion of the day’s proceeds to the Marine Corps Family Foundation
to support Operation Santa U.S.M.C. as well as care packages
throughout the year to deployed troops from all branches of the
military.

No coupons or tickets are required, patrons need only go to one of
the restaurants listed below and enjoy great food knowing they will
also be helping the troops.

VFW to host commemoration ceremony at
courthouse

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Linn Post 584 in Albany, plans a
commemoration ceremony and bell ringing this Sunday to mark the
10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on the Linn County Courthouse
steps at the front entrance on Fourth Street to honor both the
victims of the attacks and the military service personnel who have
since died while fighting the war on terror.

Bells will be rung at 8:45 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:43 a.m. and 10 a.m.
to commemorate the time each hijacked flight crashed.

Speakers are expected to include the mayor and representatives from
the Linn County Commission, Oregon House of Representatives, Albany
Fire Department, Albany Police Department, Linn County Sheriff’s
Office and Oregon State Police, as well as active duty
military.

There will be a 21-gun salute by a combined honor guard from
American Legion Post 10 in Albany and Post 51 in Lebanon.

On Dec. 18, 2001, Congress passed Public Law No. 107-89 designating
Sept. 11 as Patriot Day.

S.H. fire district to host open house,
remembrance

SWEET HOME — The Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District will host
an open house and and 9/11 remembrance ceremony from 9 a.m. until
noon, according to Fire Chief Mike Beaver.

There will be station tours, a demonstration of auto extrication
and repelling demonstrations.

Refreshments will be served.

A 9/11 ceremony will be held at 12:15 p.m. and will include
speeches by Chief Beaver and Lebanon Police Officer George Dominy.
Firefighter and police officer prayers will be said.

Praise in 3D, featuring the Dominy family, will open the ceremony
by singing the National Anthem and close it with “God Bless
America.”

Presentation of the colors will be done by VFW Post 51.

Bethlehem Lutheran service theme: Do Not
Forget!

LEBANON — Do Not Forget! will be the theme of the service Sept. 11
at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 434 E. Grant St.

Pastor Rumerfield will be showing the connection between
remembering 9/11 and how it applies to our lives in  Jesus Christ
today.

Sunday School and Bible classes will begin at 9 a.m. Children age 3
through high school are welcome.  Adults will have a Bible
study.

Following the service, there will be an omelet brunch
served.  

Recruiter’s Freedom Run will support troops

The first annual Recruiter’s Freedom Run will begin at 2 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 11, at Timber-Linn Memorial Park in Albany. Late
registration will begin at 1 p.m.

The race will be open to the public, but it’s also a race between
active military recruiters (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast
Guard and National Guard).

Awards will be given to the fastest male and female runners,
fastest male and female recruiters, runner raising the most funds
through sponsorship, recruiter raising the most funds through
sponsorship, and fastest child (12 and under).

The race will be a little over two miles. Though the run is free,
runners are encouraged to get sponsorship. All money raised will go
to GIVE2THETROOPS, an organization that supports deployed U.S.
troops in all branches of the service with letters and care
packages.

Wrestling event slated to celebrate Patriot
Day

Portland Wrestling Live is coming to VFW Post 584 to honor police,
firefighters and members of the military in connection with Patriot
Day.

The event will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, on the east lawn of
the post, 1469 Timber St., Albany. A barbecue and beer garden
begins at 2 p.m. and will run during the wrestling matches.
Concessions will be sold.

There will be a $5 gate charge for admission.

Just before the wrestling starts, Post 584 will honor fire and
police departments and active-duty military from around the area
with certificates of appreciation from the VFW.

Following wrestling there will be karaoke inside until 10
p.m.

“Everyone in the community and surrounding area is invited to
attend and help give us the recognition our first responders
deserve,” said VFW spokesman Bob Gore.

Emergency responders to describe what it’s
like

LEBANON — The community is invited to an outdoor service honoring
Lebanon police, fire and 911 dispatchers at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept.
11, at Heath Stadium.

This is the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and will be an
opportunity for citizens to show their appreciation to those who
put themselves in harm’s way in order to protect our
community.

During the one-hour get-together, first responders will describe
what it is like to be called to the scene of a severe emergency.
Three brief talks will be given by Police Chief Mike Schulte,
EMT/Firefighter Randy Whitfield and Linn County 911 Dispatcher
Supervisor Ann Otto.

Praise in 3D, a singing trio which includes two Lebanon Police
officers will perform two songs.

Dessert from Kris’ Kitchen will be served at the close of the
event, which is hosted by the Lebanon Ministerial
Association.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church to host candlelight
vigil

St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany will have a candlelight vigil
at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

St. Mary’s hosted a city-wide service just a few days after Sept.
11, 2001, and organizers plan to  incorporate some of the music and
readings from that service.

The church is located at 728 Ellsworth St. S.W.

Candlelight vigil planned at Benton vets
memorial

CORVALLIS — A candle light vigil is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept.
11, at the Benton County Veterans Memorial, 1100 Kings Blvd. N.W.
The event is to honor those who lost their lives during the
attacks, as well as emergency personnel who continue to risk their
lives every day.

People are encouraged to bring their own candles. However, they
need to be in some kind of protective holder such as cup. A limited
number of glowlights will be provided for free for those who don’t
want use candles.

Rosalind Harold, who is retired from the U.S. Navy, is scheduled to
sing the national anthem. Battalion Chief Andy Louden and Lt. Dan
Wehrman of the Corvallis Fire Department will lead the Pledge of
Allegiance and speak during the one-hour event.

Other scheduled speakers include Corvallis Mayor Julie Manning,
Benton County Commissioner Annabelle Jaramillo and Oregon State
Police Lt. Steve Mitchell.

Sweet Home-based group Praise in 3D will sing “Proud to be an
American” and “God Bless America.”
