The Most Affordable and Most Expensive Housing Markets in Maryland

What’s the most affordable housing market in Maryland? Hint: It’s two and a half hours to the west.

Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC has released a list ranking more than 2,300 markets in North America. Its rankings used four-bedroom, two-bathroom houses that were listed for sale between September 2010 and March 2011. The markets had to have at least 10 such properties to be included on the list.

The cheapest of the 32 markets in Maryland is Cumberland, which is located in Allegany County. Its average price for a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house was $160,497, which is less than half the Maryland average of $381,314.

Cumberland was ranked as the 316th most affordable market in the country. The national average is $293,251. A list of the full national rankings can be seen at this link.

Columbia is the 20th most affordable market in Maryland—or the 13th most expensive—with an average price of $395,180. It is the 1,866th most affordable market in the country.

Ellicott City is the 26th most affordable market in Maryland—or the 7th most expensive—with an average price of $501,471. It is the 2,075th most affordable market in the country.

The most expensive market in Maryland is Annapolis, with an average price of $688,232. A full list, from most affordable to most expensive, can be seen below.
