IC design houses Integrated Memory Logic (iML) and Capella Microsystems are both reportedly in cooperation talks with Apple and could become the first Taiwan-based fables IC vendors to land orders from the company, which has so far maintained a policy of using IC solutions coming from international players only.
Prices of iML stock, which is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE), have soared 25% recently after market reports claimed that Apple is likely to use programmable Gamma buffers from iML for its iPad tablets, according to industry sources.
iML, which also maintains a headquarters in the US, has seen the penetration rate of its programmable Gamma buffers growing in Taiwan and Korea, noted the sources.
iML posted an EPS of NT$7.86 in 2010, according to company data.
Capella, which ships over one million ambient-light sensors to HTC a month currently, has reportedly delivered its products to Apple for verification as the ambient-light sensors currently used by iPhone 4 have been criticized for some problems, said the sources, noting that Capella may received Apple’s orders before the end of the year at the earliest.
Capella shares, which are listed on Taiwan’s OTC market, suffered a major setback recently as sentiment for the stock was blunted by its decreased first-quarter gross margin.
Capella’s gross margin stood at 46.03% in the first quarter, compared to 49.4% of the previous quarter and 53.14% of a year earlier, company data showed. First-quarter EPS was NT$1.50.
