Managing redundancy: The human touch

People don’t fear redundancy – they fear what redundancy means for them: loss of income, and its impact on them, their confidence and their families.

Consider this “bigger picture” and look at ways of offering support to those who are leaving as well as those staying behind.

In the local area there are a lot of resources and support available – a number of them free of charge:

  • The Responding to Redundancies scheme (R2R) offers sponsored careers advice and training to at risk employees
  • The Richmond Fellowship can help deal with stress and depression caused by redundancy
  • Outplacement providers can help reassure your staff and provide training in the skills required to find new employment
  • Open Workshops on topics such as Confidence, Financial Planning, Job Search Processes, CV preparation and Networking are regularly listed under the Events section on the Cambridge Network.

Making redundancies is a business decision, but managing redundancies requires a human touch and an understanding of the wider implications of the decision. If the possibility of redundancies is on your horizon, make sure you are armed with all the information needed to manage the process sensitively.
