Old Wymering Manor – History and Influence in the Local Area

OLD WYMERING MANOR

Janet Hird from The Friends of Old Wymering is talking to the Portsmouth Group of the Hampshire Genealogical Society about Old Wymering Manor its history and influence in the local area. Members and non-members are welcome.

Wymering Manor House is one of the oldest houses in Portsmouth and the oldest in Old Wymering Conservation Area. The house is a Grade II listed historic building. However, it has not been repaired since the collapse of the north-east corner of the building which occurred about 8 years ago.

The house is owned by Portsmouth City Council who bought it when it was threatened with demolition. They are currently trying to find a buyer who will invest in the future of the Manor.

The Friends of Old Wymering (FOW) came into existence in 2006 as a result of a grassroots campaign to save Wymering Manor from the threat of demolition. They have two objectives: To promote interest in Old Wymering and to promote, encourage and support the restoration of Wymering Manor house and any other historic and interesting buildings in Old Wymering. They see them as resources for history and social education. You can find out more about the Friends by visiting their website www.friendsofoldwymering.org.uk
