Jake Locker’s 40-yard dash on Sunday morning was timed at 4.52 seconds by the NFL Network. That’s an unofficial time, though. The results posted on the league’s Web site — which enumerates top combine performers — is 4.59 seconds, which is tied with Cam Newton for third-fastest among all quarterbacks.

So what’s the deal?

Well, now we get into the gray area of what constitutes an “official” time. Teams keep their own records of all the tests. They also get a list of results distributed by the NFL Scouting Combine. That’s the time that is posted now on the results for the top performers.

Bottom line: Don’t get too carried away about the discrepancy. Locker ran fast, but not off-the-charts fast. Cam Newton’s time of 4.59 seconds was considered impressive. So is Locker’s. It’s just not jaw-dropping.
