METAIRIE — No players were listed as doubtful or out for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there was a long list of questionables.
“Questionable” technically means the player has a 50 percent chance of not playing in that week’s game.
Tight ends David Thomas (knee) and Jeremy Shockey (groin) both missed practice and are questionable to play. Defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove also missed practice Friday and is questionable.
Wide receiver Mar-ques Colston is coming off minor knee surgery this week, also missed practice and is being listed as questionable.
Running back Pierre Thomas was limited in practice and is questionable as well. Reserve linebacker Anthony Waters also missed practice and is questionable.
A testy Payton, upset over the reporting of Colston’s midweek surgery, provided no other injury news when asked if Pierre Thomas had any other physical setbacks in Monday’s game.
“No,” he said, “and nothing more about injuries. What I’m going to do anymore is just read the status and not discuss injuries.”
Payton said the league only requires coaches to classify the injuries, not elaborate on each one.
“We’ll list them,” Payton said. “Just to discuss them, there’s no benefit for us in regards to each week’s game and really from our perspective, this is what the league requires. That’s really it. The league doesn’t require us to discuss the injuries from day to day, nor surgeries for that matter.”
Payton said issues like the reporting of Colston’s surgery are a matter of competitive advantage.
“It was a Saints fan that blogged (Marques) Colston coming out of surgery,” Payton said. “I was waiting for you to have the nerve to ask me according to a blog and you just hypothetically asked me if Colston had a surgery. I understand that and yet, really the report is what we give and you’re right. I do hate to have any type of competitive edge that would work against us. I think injuries clearly in my experience can potentially do that.”
