Rental prices across major Australian cities have been mapped against the railway lines to help renters decide whether to move further from the central suburbs but close to a train station.
Share accommodation website Flatmates.com.au has mapped the average weekly rental prices along train stops to help hopeful new residents balance prices against access to public transport.
In Sydney, where the housing market is notoriously inaccessible, harbour-side suburb Milsons Point had the highest average weekly rent of $381 per week for a room.

Currently for lease on Victoria Street in Potts Point, the third most expensive suburb in Sydney to rent a room, a two bedroom apartment is currently up for rent for $700, or $350 per room. The average weekly price for a room in the suburb is $344
The lower north shore suburb was followed by inner city Pyrmont and Potts Point, then Manly in the northern beaches, Edgecliff, Haymarket, Sydney city and Surry Hills.
As the map shows, cost of living in Sydney can be reduced by looking for accommodation a little further from the city but with access to a train station.

‘We wanted to show our users approximately how much they may need to spend to live in a desired area,’ CEO of Flatmates.com.au, Thomas Clement, told Daily Mail Australia.
He said they also wanted to show ‘how much they could save by picking a suburb a few stops further out.’
For example, inner-west suburb Ashfield has an average weekly rental price of $233, but is a short 20 to 25 minute train ride from the city.

The Mary Street home in Surry Hills is $950 per week, or $316 per room – $8 cheaper than the suburb’s average
In Melbourne, central suburb Docklands topped the weekly rental price, with an average of $288. Nearby suburb Southbank followed closely behind at $285 a week
To really save on rent, many outer suburbs further along the train lines are more than half the price in rent than central suburbs.
‘Many people who live in shared accommodation in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, rely on public transport to get to work or university, so we also wanted to make planning easier for them,’ Mr Clement said.
‘We decided to use the train maps as they are instantly recognisable and people are already familiar with their layout.’
‘We also included a few popular bus interchanges and suburbs off the rail lines for price comparisons,’ the CEO said.

On Keele Street in Collingwood, which tied as the fifth most expensive suburb to rent a room in Melbourne, a three bedroom property is for lease at $765

Port Melbourne and South Yarra tied with an average of $264, followed by East Melbourne and Collingwood.

Brisbane’s highest average weekly rental price topped at $275 in the CBD.
Dutton Park and inner suburbs South Brisbane and Fortitude Valley followed behind.
On Stephens Road, South Brisbane, a three bedroom property is currently for lease for $700 weekly rent, around $233 per room.
The average weekly rent for a room in the suburb is $250 each week, making the Stephens Road property $17 a week cheaper than the suburb’s average.
Average weekly rental prices in the Queensland capital got as low as $143 in outer-north suburb Dakabin.
Flatemates.com.au had based the average room rates for each suburb from 2015 listings on the website.
