Bid to improve golf and country clubhouse recommended for approval

A BID to improve a golf and country clubhouse has been recommended for approval despite an objection from a parish council.

Warren Golf Club in Old London Road, Woodham Walter, has applied to make alterations to its clubhouse in order to improve access for disabled people and enhance its ability to host events.

The changes include a porch extension, increasing the height of part of the roof and blocking up an existing window.

Woodham Walter Parish Council has objected to the plans for the Grade II listed building.

Their objection said: “The roof currently has a non-standard pitch, the proposal alters the pitch and ridgeline which will take away its character.

“This will detract from the relationship of the two principle buildings, fails to give definition and alters the context and setting of the complex.”

But Maldon District Council officers have now recommended the plans for approval.

Councillors on the north western area planning committee will decide on the plans on Monday.

The officer’s report said: “The development proposes to provide an extensions and alterations to the listed clubhouse.

“Majority of the works would affect the west elevation of the building and the ‘link’ between the two listed barns which is central to the building.

“The extensions and alterations have been sympathetically designed and would remain subservient to the principle elements of the building.

“It is proposed that the external and internal materials would match the existing building.”

The planning meeting takes place at the council offices in Princes Road, Maldon, from 7.30pm.
