Women’s Meet
The #13 Indiana Hoosiers beat the #18 Purdue Boilermakers 185.5-114.5 in a battle of Big Ten rivals Saturday at Indiana, as the Hoosiers won 11 of out of 14 events. Sophomores from both schools led the way, accounting for seven of the the 11 individual event victories and several key relay legs.
In the first event, the 200 medley relay, Indiana sophomore Marie Chamberlain led off for Indiana’s A relay in 25.65, almost a second faster than any Purdue backstroker, freshman Lilly King had the fastest breaststroke split in the field (26.98), and junior Gia Dalesandro and sophomore Gabi Rajic kept their squad in the lead from beginning to end, finishing in 1:40.39, well over as second faster ahead of Purdue’s second place “A” team.
Sophomores won the first three individual events of the meet. First, Purdue’s Kaersten Meitz won the 1000 free in 9:44.58, over ten seconds ahead of Indiana senior Haley Lips (9:55.40). In the 200 free, Indiana sophomore Kennedy Goss jumped out to an early lead and hung on to beat Purdue senior Alexa Davis 1:46.42 to 1:46.52. Notably, Lips (1:48.07) and Metiz (1:49.21) placed third and fourth, right after swimming the 1000. Then, Chamberlain won the 100 back in 55.00.
Indiana’s King finally broke the sophomore stranglehold on individual event victories, taking the 100 breast in 1:00.23. The Hoosier kept their streak going behind victories from Dalesandro in the 200 fly (2:00.85), while Grace Vertigans led a 1-3 sweep by Indiana sophomores in the 50 free. Vertigans touched first in 23.65, while Kaitlyn Kitchens just touched out Raijic 23.90 to 23.92.
After the break, Purdue got their second win of the meet, as Davis picked up the victory with a 50.56 in the 100 free.
Indiana took the next two events. Goss got her second win of the day, taking the 200 back in 1:59.82. Then, King completed the brestroke sweep, winning the 200 breast by almost three seconds in 2:12.60.
Purdue’s Meitz and Indiana’s Dalesandro also earned doubles in the next two events. Metz won the 500 free by over three seconds (4:46.62), then Dalesandro took the 100 fly in 54.82.
Keeping with the theme of the day, a sophomore, Hoosier Samantha Lisy, wrapped up the individual events with a win in the 400 IM. Lisy was only in the 6th place at the halfway point, but then surged to the lead with the fastest breastroke split in the field, and hung on with a sub-1:00 freestyle leg to finish in 4:19.20, almost three seconds ahead of the next finisher, fellow Indiana sophomore Reagan Cook (4:22.14).
In the final event of the day, Indiana’s team of Goss, Lips, Vertigans, and Kitchens won by over a second, 3:23.13 to Purdue’s 3:24.23. The fastest split actually belonged to the distance double champion, Meitz, who anchored that relay in 50.49.
Men’s Meet
The Indiana men, also ranked #13 in our latest men’s NCAA Power Rankings, took down the Purdue Boilermakers 187-107 while winning all except one event.
In the first event, the 200 medley relay, the Indiana team of junior Bob Glover, senior Tanner Kurtz, Vini Lanza, and junior Anze Tavcar touched in 1:27.91, winning by exactly two seconds over Purdue’s “A” relay.
Next, Indiana took the top four spots in both the 1000 and 200 freestyle events. Freshman Adam Destrampe took the 1000 in a time of 9:18.65, while sophomore Blake Pieroni won the 200 free in 1:36.54.
The Hoosiers continued to roll over the next four events, although a Boilermaker took second place in each. Glover won the 100 back in 48.57 over Purdue senior Stephen Seliskar (50.05). Kurz beat sophomore Marat Amaltdinov 54.27 to 55.53 in the 100 breast. In the 200 fly, Indiana junior Max Irwin overtook Purdue senior Daniel Conway just past the 150 mark to win 1:48.59 to 1:49.58. The 50 free followed the same pattern, with Indiana sophomore Ali Khalafalla beating out Purdue senior Adam Johnston 19.96 to 20.23.
After the break, things got switched up just a little as two Indiana swimmers dueled for first place, with Tavcar (44.48) touching out Khalafalla (44.66). Then, Glover completed a sweep of the backstroke events with a 1:48.52 win in the 200 back. The 200 breast was a reverse of the 100 breast, with Amaltdinov picking up Purdue’s only victory of the day by beating Kurz 1:59.68 to 2:02.37.
Indiana won each of the final three individual events. Junior Jackson Miller won the 500 free by over five seconds, in 4:27.23. Lanza, who is coming from Brazil and whose class is not yet officially listed, won the 100 fly with a 48.94. Finally, freshman Ian Finnerty led the 200 IM from the first wall to the last, taking the win in 1:51.28.
The Hoosiers wrapped up the day with a win in the 400 free relay. Tavcar, Khalafalla, sophomore Oliver Patrouch, and Pieroni won in 2:57.93, highlighted by Pieroni’s 43.61 anchor leg.
