Georgian town houses in Bristol to get new lease of life as apartments

A row of listed town houses in Redcliffe are set to return to residential use after years as offices.

Part of a prominent row of red brick Georgian properties, numbers 3-8 Redcliffe Parade, and a large 1970s extension, will be refurbished/converted to 31 one, two and three-bed apartments. Planning permission for the change was granted yesterday (January 18).

The scheme also includes two new-build elements – an additional floor on top of the 1970s building and a two-storey, three-bed coach house in the south west corner of the site fronting Barossa Place. There will also be 22 car parking spaces and 59 cycle spaces, and outdoor space.

This plan follows an existing planning permission (granted in June 2014) for conversion to six 5-bed houses, and to demolish the modern office block and to build six mews houses and two flats, and to cover the car park with a garden.

This was not, it would appear, altogether welcomed by the locals. Indeed, Bristol City Council’s report on the latest plans admit that “the amount and scale of new-build elements has been significantly reduced compared to the consented scheme” and “the proposals have sought to address local residents’ concerns about the scale of the new-build element of the consented scheme”.
