Celebrate the life of David Bowie at these local events

San Francisco, along with the rest of the world, is grieving the loss of David Bowie. 

The wonderfully enigmatic musician and actor died just days after his 69th birthday following a secret battle with cancer, but not before gifting his fans with a sendoff gift: the music video for his latest “Lazarus.”

The world over is recounting stories from his life, and remembering the incredible things he did.


Just before he died, some fans even created a generator that tells users the incredible things David Bowie accomplished at their age. Bootie SF paid tribute too, by compiling their favorite Bowie mashups for people to download free

In the Bay Area, planning is already underway for more events to honor the late Bowie. Here are some below.

January 13, 2016: The Lab plans to hold a free screening of “The Man Who Fell to Earth” at 7 p.m. Attendees are advised to “bring your own food, drinks, drag personas and otherworldly fashions.”

January 13, 2016: The First Church of the Sacred Silversexual will host a tribute at Slim’s that will celebrate the art and life of David Bowie. 


January 14, 2016: Alamo Drafthouse is putting together a music video sing-along of Bowie tunes. More info here.

January 15, 2016: “Bowie by the Bay” is calling for a Bay Area-wide “community effort” to celebrate the life of Bowie. The event invite is collecting tribute plans across San Francisco and the East Bay, including this post that outlines where you can go to hear Bowie tunes across the city.

January 15, 2016: Heat and Dagger Saloon in Oakland is planning a David Bowie-themed happy hour, soundtracked by “a killer Bowie playlist for your earholes.”

January 15, 2016: 1015 Folsom will hold a Bowie tribute party for folks 21 and up.

January 15, 2016: New Parkway Theater in Oakland has listed a special screening of the iconic Bowie film, “Labyrinth.”

January 29, 2016: The Jean Genies tribute band will alter their planned Michael Jackson-themed show to also honor David Bowie. Bimbo’s 365 Club, San Francisco.

March 29, 2016: YBCA Presents: “David Bowie is Happening Now,” a free screening of a documentary centered around a Bowie exhibition in London that “explores the incredible works in the exhibition and the thoughts and feelings people have had seeing them.”
