FUNDRAISING efforts are underway for St Stephen’s the Martyr Church in Launceston after it was placed on the “heritage at risk” register.

The Anglican church on Roydon Road, Launceston, is a Grade 1 listed building and plans have been made to fix the leaking roof as well as build better toilet and kitchen facilities.

An estimate of £750,000 was made for the work and fundraising has now started.

Reverend Jane Everitt, the rector of Launceston Parish, said the congregation work tirelessly to fund and maintain the church.

Pupils from St Stephens Community Academy presented a cheque for £277.10 during a school assembly last Wednesday. The money was the collection taken at the school’s Carol Service, held at the church, just before Christmas and donated to the church roof fund, at the children’s request.

Gill Mann and her daughter Pippa raised money by creating a bright, geometric quilt, which is being raffled at £1 a ticket.

Further fundraising efforts are planned and people from the church are looking into grant applications.
