PlayStationVR briefly listed on Amazon for $800

It is clear at this point that virtual reality is going to be expensive to get into, especially if you want a first generation device. While the Oculus Rift was given an official $600 price tag yesterday, we have yet to see official prices for the HTC Vive or PlayStationVR, though Amazon Canada may have given us a peek at one of them.

Earlier today, Amazon Canada listed Sony’s PlayStationVR headset at $1,125.35 Canadian dollars, which works out at around $800 in the US, which is more expensive than even the Rift.

While the price has been scrubbed from the listing, Forbes did manage to get a comment from Sony, which didn’t officially deny the price point but rather simply said that no price has been announced: “This was an error by Amazon, we haven’t announced a price for PlayStation VR.”

This could well have just been a mistake, it happens at retailers from time to time. However, Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus has been trying to stress that VR is going to be expensive, going as far as to say that the Rift is “obscenely cheap for what it is”.

We don’t know a ton about Sony’s VR headset release plans though we do know that it will feature a 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It will also come with an additional processing box, which will help the PS4 run games at the high frame rates that virtual reality requires.

KitGuru Says: While I doubt that the PlayStationVR will be more expensive than the Rift, I do think it would be a good idea for people to manage their expectations now. The Oculus Rift had the benefit of Facebook backing it and even then, it still turned out to be $600, the PSVR is lower spec but it will likely end up costing just as much as the PS4 console itself.
