Big Hull Survey: What City of Culture 2017 should be about

ORGANISERS of the UK City of Culture 2017 programme should focus strongly on celebrating both the history and future of Hull, say Mail readers.

When asked what they would most like to see in 2017, 21.5 per cent of respondents to the Mail’s Big Hull Survey voted for “a celebration of the future and history of Hull”.

The second most popular choice was “live music” with 16.5 per cent of the votes, followed by family events (16.3 per cent).

Some 15.3 per cent of respondents most wanted to see major national events, such as the Brit Awards, while 9 per cent asked for pop concerts.

The Big Hull Survey, which was launched last week, has seen more than 1,800 people respond, with time still left for others to get involved.

Councillor Steven Bayes, portfolio holder for UK City of Culture and vice-chairman of the 2017 board, said programmes in place for the event would provide a major lift for the city.

“It was always the plan to get more events in and make Hull a city of artistic and musical events,” he said.

“The City of Culture is a huge boost for the city, and to be able to put big events on will be a huge draw to bring people into Hull.

“That was one of the key things we want to build towards on the event side.

“We want to draw people into the city through big events – that’s what we are hoping to do.”

Among the events already listed for Hull in 2017 is the major artistic award, the Turner Prize.

Cllr Bayes said events planned by the 2017 team need to be approved by the artistic director, but that everybody was looking forward to getting celebrations under way.

“There is still a lot to do and we have to make sure that things will be in place in time,” he said.

“There is a lot to do, but we still have a year so the city should be ready.

“Hopefully, what we put on will carry on for the legacy years after 2017, which is a really big part of what we want to come out of it as well.”

The Big Hull Survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete.

The results will be published in the Mail in the new year and handed to key decision-makers.
