The war memorial has been added to a list of buildings which are considered to have ‘special architectural or historic interest’ by Historic England.

The monument is now listed as grade II, which means developers must apply for listed building consent if wanting to make any changes to it.

The memorial was built in 1922 and was designed by renowned sculptor Alfred Drury. After World War Two, another three plinths with plaques were built, designed by celebrated architect Walter Cave.

Historic England’s report on the monument says: “This is a highly eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community.

“It has a distinctive architectural quality while adopting a suitably solemn appearance for its commemorative purpose.”
