App maps out holiday cheer around Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – It may be Christmas Eve, but there’s still time to find the best holiday light displays and holiday events in your neighborhood with an app called Nextdoor.

Nextdoor is a private social media app for your neighborhood. It connects people in the same community where they can discuss what matters most to them. In this case, users listed their favorite places for holiday cheer and Nextdoor released on their second annual Fort Myers Holiday Cheer Map.

Wreaths, lights and holiday decorations are all sure signs Christmas time is here. It’s the season family and friends come together to celebrate.

“My neighbors and I, our families get together every year. We’ve done it for the last four years now, hang the big ornaments, put the lights on the tree, grill and just kind of hang out and have a nice time.”

Now, with the help of the app, anyone can find places and neighborhoods near you to celebrate the season.

The holiday cheer map shows you seasonal spots and upcoming holiday events. You can even pin your own for others to enjoy. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates made the list, as did the Murphy and Burroughs holiday homes, along with a neighborhood on Burtwood Drive. Individual homes, tree lighting’s and other events are also listed.

Burtwood resident Chris Pennington, who recently moved to the area says his neighborhood reminds him of his home in Minnesota.

“Moving down to Florida, you know I’ve been down here for a few years now and it’s kind of hard sometimes to find the holiday spirit as much as it is up north because you don’t have a white Christmas,” says Pennington. “But when you have that kind of an atmosphere you know, in the neighborhood it really helps out a lot.”

Other residents who decorated for the holidays says he’s proud of his festive street and hopes other people enjoy it.

“It’s pretty awesome. You know it’s nice that everybody takes the time to put up a little something just to give people a nice evening to drive around and check it out,” said a Burtwood Drive neighbor.

“It’s great. I mean i have a 6 year-old daughter too. So i mean, she loves that kind of thing. So it’s a nice little, a nice little environment for that,” says Pennington.

Nextdoor is free and is available for both Android and iPhone.
